Duck Hunting 11/26/11

There is nothing like a sunrise over the water whether you are hunting or fishing. Something about hearing and seeing nature come to life makes you feel more connected to the Creator and creation.

Today I went duck hunting with my friend Lee Smids, his dad Fred, and his black lab "Bear." I met him at his house at 4:30am. We loaded up our gear, went and picked up his dad, and got to J.D. Murphree WMA in Southeast Texas about 5:00am. After following 33 other boats through the gate to check in, we launched the Gator Trax/Mud Buddy rig and headed to our area of choice on Eagle Lake.

We set up our decoys and raised the blinds attached to the sides of the boat, and shortly after the safe shooting time of 6:20 we started seeing a few ducks. I got my first blue wing teal with my Remington Bone Collector 870 at about 7:00. The action was sporadic, and according to Lee not nearly as fast as it had been over the past few weeks. He attributed the lack of activity to the amount of hunting pressure the area is under.

Despite some misses and trigger happy neighbors scaring off several incoming groups, we still managed to get 6 ducks by 9:00 and then headed in. We bagged blue wing teal, canvasback, gadwall, and a shoveler.

We capped off the morning with breakfast and coffee at Waffle House and then went home to clean our game. All in all it was a great day enjoying the outdoors!

Gear Review - Bowtech Insanity CPX

A while back I traded my Hoyt Maxxis for a 2012 Bowtech Insanity CPX. After setting up the new bow with my trusty Spot Hogg sight, QAD rest and Doinker stabilizer, I took it out to a 3D range for a test drive. It didn’t take long to realize that it’s a shooter. My first bow was a Hoyt ViperTec, a 2004 model. I spent countless hours shooting that thing and it served very well as an introductory tool to the wonderful world of archery. From that first bow, I was a Hoyt “fan boy.” To me, Hoyt bows just felt right, and I saw no reason to change. I shot a few other bows, but none of them impressed me enough to leave my beloved Hoyts. Hoyts aren’t the fastest, but I grouped pretty good, and took a few animals and a 3D trophy plaque with a Hoyt in hand. Quail Hunting at Buckeyes Plantation

The weather here in Georgia, and the rest of the country for that matter, has been downright nice this year.  It's been unseasonably warm, and forecasters always predict a miserable summer after such a pleasant winter.  According to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) January 2012 was the fourth warmest January on record in the United States.  In addition, several states have had very little snowfall, and this threatens them with a dry Summer.  Nevertheless, getting out in the outdoors is a lot more pleasant when the temps are this comfortable.  Today I went on my first ever Quail Hunt. Along with my friends Jon Gissendaner and Mark Jeffries, and a friend of Mark's called "Paw Pat," I hunted quail and chukkar at Buckeyes Plantation in Jersey, GA.
